After browsing “Generative Design” by Hartmut Bohnacker, I realized most of the graphic design I really like is generative design. Luckily, this book removes some of the mystery on how to create generative design work.
Some of the more inspiring examples of Generative Design:
10,000 Digital Paintings by FIELD (2011)
10.000 prints comprising different views of a sculpture. Not entirely sure how the paintings were generated, but love the resulting colorful landscapes.
Gestalt by Thorsten Fleisch (2003)
An experimental short film exploring the visual space of a mathematical formula.
Red Ambush by Eno Henze (2007)
An attempt by the artist to program the computer to draw like a human.
Footfalls by Golan Levin and Zachary Lieberman (2006)
Interactive audiovisual installation in which user’s stomping controls bouncing virtual objects. Users control the objects using their silhouettes.
Poetry on the Road by Boris Muller and Florian Pfeffer (2002-2010)
Function word analysis of the poetry for an annual festival dictates the design of the annual poster. I would love to analyze the lyrics of an album in order to create the album cover.
Process Compendium by Casey Reas (2004-2010)
Processing sketches explore the phenomenon of emergence.
